KUALA LUMPUR: The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) expects the value of construction work done to grow by 4.2% this year against a decline of 0.5% in 2006.
General manager of its construction business development division, Sariah Abdul Karib, said the value of projects awarded this year was likely to improve to RM57bil from RM55.1bil last year.
Of this, RM33bil was expected from the private sector while the balance would be from public spending, mainly on the Ninth Malaysia Plan (including private finance initiatives), she told reporters on the sidelines of the Malaysian Construction Sector Review 2006/07 and Outlook seminar yesterday.
These estimates do not include potential projects to be rolled out under the five economic corridors such as the Iskandar Development Region and the Northern Corridor Economic Region.
On the issue of shoddy construction work, Sariah said CIDB was empowered to suspend or withdraw licences but these actions would only be taken after investigations were completed.
As of June, there were 63,355 contractors registered with CIDB.
Based on CIDB statistics, 1,827 contracts valued at RM19.5bil were awarded in the first half of the year. These covered new projects as well as upgrading, expansion, maintenance, repair and renovation works.
Government contracts accounted for RM7.8bil and RM11.7bil came from the private sector.
