Hong Kong’s Far East Consortium International has opened its Dorsett brand hotel in Penang, northwestern Malaysia, the local press reported Tuesday.
Far East took over the management contract from Sheraton effective on April 1 but right now it has not yet bought the property in Georgetown, capital of Penang state.
“We don’t want to buy it yet. We want to analyze the (Penang) market first. We will give it about a year before we consider buying the property,” Dorsett Penang Acting General Manager Hadi Yusuf told the New Straits Times.
The four-star Dorsett Penang includes a 237-room hotel and a 20- floor commercial building called Penang Plaza, which has an estimated value of 60 million ringgit (17.14 million U.S. dollars).
This is Far East’s second Dorsett hotel in Malaysia and ninth hotel internationally. It is also the first hotel property that the Far East Group is managing and does not own. The hotel is owned by a Malaysian company, Faber Kompleks Sdn Bhd.
The hotel hopes it will be able to reach the state’s 68 percent average occupancy by year-end. Once the hotel has completed its rebranding exercise and some minor works, Dorsett is aiming to achieve 75 percent occupancy in average, Hadi added.
